Medicare Basics Workshop Slated for Tues., Aug. 13, in Beloit

If you’ll soon be getting Medicare, or just want to know more about Medicare, you have a special opportunity on Tuesday, Aug. 13, in Beloit to get answers to your questions and learn what you need to know to navigate the Medicare maze.
The Answers for Older Kansans (AOK) Medicare Basics workshop sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA), will provide unbiased, easy-to-understand information for anyone interested in learning more about Medicare. The workshop is geared to those who are nearing age 65, those soon to qualify because of a disability and Kansans who are helping family members with insurance and financial matters. It is also open to anyone who has questions on their current Medicare coverage.
The Beloit AOK Medicare Basics workshop will happen Tues., Aug. 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Beloit Senior Center, 220 N. Hersey, Beloit. While there is no cost to attend, advance registration is advised.
Karen Mayse, supervisor of NC-FH AAA’s Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program, will cover Medicare eligibility, how and when to apply, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Counselors will also explain programs available to assist low income individuals and how to watch out for Medicare fraud. There will be a question/answer period following the formal presentation.
“Those who have attended these Area Agency on Aging workshops give us high ratings and tell us that they’ve gotten answers to their questions about Medicare.” said Julie Govert Walter, NC-FH AAA Executive Director. “We are delighted to be bringing this workshop to Beloit,” she said.
To register, or if you have any questions, call the Area Agency on Aging at 800-432-2703, the Beloit Senior Center at 738-5802, or Jay Rowh, Mitchell County Silver Haired Legislator at 785-738-0241.

June Unemployment Rates

The State’s June seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, up from 4.8 percent in May and down from 5.6 percent in June 2013.

Kansas gained 15,000 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, an increase of 1.3 percent since last year, and 18,400 nonfarm jobs, also a 1.3 percent increase. Since last month, Kansas gained 700 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, a 0.1 percent increase. The state added 500 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs, with no significant percent change.

“With another month of private sector job growth, Kansas continues its comeback from the recession, having now added more than 55,000 private sector jobs since January 2011,” said Secretary of Labor, Lana Gordon.

Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 15,200 private sector jobs since last year, or 1.4 percent, and 16,700 nonfarm jobs, an increase of 1.2 percent. Since May, Kansas gained 8,600 private sector jobs, a 0.8 percent increase, and lost 2,400 nonfarm jobs, a 0.2 percent decline.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, up from 4.6 percent in May and down from 5.7 percent last year.

“Kansas recorded a slight increase in the labor force, adjusting for seasonal effects,” said Efua Afful, Labor Economist. “This indicates continued confidence that the economy will provide opportunities for employment.”

There were 9,844 initial claims for unemployment benefits in June 2014, down from 12,518 in May and down from 13,284 last year. There were 87,190 continued claims in June, up from 76,255 the previous month and down from 106,824 in June 2013. These numbers include all available programs.

Mitchell County Unemployment for June ’14 was 3.7% compared to May ’14 at 3.6% and June ’13 at 3.2%.

Donate Blood in Honor of Keller King

Thursday, July 17
11am-6pm
NCK Wellness Center Gym
3033 US Hwy 24, Beloit

About Keller

On February 11th, 2014, Jerica, Keller’s mother, noticed her son had an enlarged abdomen, a fever, looked very pale and lacked energy. This began a whirlwind of doctors’ appointments and medical tests that ended with admission into Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Keller had a cancerous Wilms tumor on his kidney. The tumor caused his red blood cell counts to be very low, requiring him to need a four-hour blood transfusion before he could undergo surgery to remove the tumor. Following the surgery, Keller began an 18-week chemotherapy program. He is doing well with his treatment program so far and is experiencing few side effects. Recent tests of his chest and abdomen have come back clear. Keller should complete his last round on July 3rd. Please donate blood for patients like Keller.

2014 Unemployment Insurance Changes for Kansas Business

NEW EMPLOYERS:

Beginning in rate year 2015, all new employers, except those in the construction industry, who begin operation on July 1, 2014 or after are eligible for the new Unemployment Insurance (UI) contribution rate of 2.7 percent. Alternatively, if the employer moves to Kansas from another state, the employer may pay the Kansas rate corresponding with the employer’s earned experience from the previous state instead of the standard 2.7 percent. However, the minimum rate is 1 percent. To qualify for this alternative UI rate, employers must meet these requirements:
• The new employer has been in operation in another state for a minimum of three years;
• The new employer provides an authenticated account history from the employer’s operations;
• The business operations established in Kansas are of the same nature, as defined by the North American Industrial Classification System, as the operations in another state; and
• The new employer must make election of the alternative rate within 30 days of notice of Kansas liability.
EXISTING EMPLOYERS:

For rate year 2014, which began January 1, 2014, existing eligible positive balance employers will see a 15% discount on their 2014 state unemployment tax rates. Eligible employers were notified in April.
Additionally, an expanding employer in Kansas is eligible to receive a lower rate based on the employer’s reserve fund ratio history or the new employer rate of 2.7 percent for four years, subject to approval by the Secretary of Labor. To qualify for this, an employer must meet the following criteria:
• There has been a 100 percent increase in the taxable payroll over the previous year, due to employment growth and not because of a change in the taxable wage base;
• The employer has a positive account balance, meaning the employer has contributed more to the UI System than what has been paid out in benefits to workers previously employed; and
• The employer maintains a positive account balance throughout the four-year period the reduced rate is in effect.
For existing employers, the bill removes the cap placed on voluntary contributions. Previously, voluntary contributions were limited to no more than five rate groups. Now, an employer is permitted to “buy down” the tax rate as much as desired.
