Jobs Report July 2014
The state’s July seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, down from 5.6 percent in July 2013.

Kansas gained 13,500 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, an increase of 1.2 percent since last year, and 13,800 nonfarm jobs, a 1 percent increase. Since last month, Kansas gained 900 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, a 0.1 percent increase. The state gained 2,100 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs, a 0.2 percent increase since last month.

“Several signs demonstrate continuing strength in the Kansas economy. We continue to see private sector job growth and low unemployment with the number of Kansans working at one of the highest levels in state history,” said Lana Gordon, Secretary of Labor.
Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 21,200 private sector jobs since last year, or 1.9 percent, and 22,300 nonfarm jobs, an increase of 1.6 percent. Since June, Kansas gained 4,000 private sector jobs, a 0.4 percent increase. The state lost 14,800 nonfarm jobs over the month, a 1.1 percent decline, primarily due to seasonal declines in local government as teachers enjoyed their summer break.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4 percent, up from 5.1 percent in June and down from 6 percent last year.

“Part of the seasonal pattern the state goes through each summer is the decline in jobs in June, when the school year ends and in July when summer school finishes,” said Tyler Tenbrink, Senior Labor Economist. “This explains the monthly change in not seasonally adjusted jobs. When educators return from their break, these jobs will return in the September estimates. Further, the 2013 to 2014 July comparison shows good growth in jobs.”

There were 12,193 initial claims for unemployment benefits in July 2014, up from 9,844 in June and down from 14,264 last year. There were 73,127 continued claims in July, down from 87,190 the previous month and down from 131,851 in July 2013. These numbers include all available programs.
Mitchell County unemployment for July 2014 was 4.0% compared to 3.7% in June 2014 and 3.3% in July 2013.

Medicare Basics Workshop Slated for Tues., Aug. 13, in Beloit

If you’ll soon be getting Medicare, or just want to know more about Medicare, you have a special opportunity on Tuesday, Aug. 13, in Beloit to get answers to your questions and learn what you need to know to navigate the Medicare maze.
The Answers for Older Kansans (AOK) Medicare Basics workshop sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA), will provide unbiased, easy-to-understand information for anyone interested in learning more about Medicare. The workshop is geared to those who are nearing age 65, those soon to qualify because of a disability and Kansans who are helping family members with insurance and financial matters. It is also open to anyone who has questions on their current Medicare coverage.
The Beloit AOK Medicare Basics workshop will happen Tues., Aug. 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Beloit Senior Center, 220 N. Hersey, Beloit. While there is no cost to attend, advance registration is advised.
Karen Mayse, supervisor of NC-FH AAA’s Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program, will cover Medicare eligibility, how and when to apply, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Counselors will also explain programs available to assist low income individuals and how to watch out for Medicare fraud. There will be a question/answer period following the formal presentation.
“Those who have attended these Area Agency on Aging workshops give us high ratings and tell us that they’ve gotten answers to their questions about Medicare.” said Julie Govert Walter, NC-FH AAA Executive Director. “We are delighted to be bringing this workshop to Beloit,” she said.
To register, or if you have any questions, call the Area Agency on Aging at 800-432-2703, the Beloit Senior Center at 738-5802, or Jay Rowh, Mitchell County Silver Haired Legislator at 785-738-0241.

Have Any Exciting News to Share?

The Chamber wants to help spread the word about your business. “Noteworthy News” is your opportunity to do just that. It’s a great way to inform other Chamber members about anything that’s new within your organization. Fill us in on what’s happening from staff changes to a new product or service. Send it to beloitchamber@nckcn.com by Thursday afternoons and I will include it in Chamber Chat!
