Welcome New Chamber Member

The Chamber would like to welcome Car-Tel Enterprises, Cawker City, as the newest member of the Chamber. Car-Tel Enterprises in north-central Kansas provides the best in video surveillance and alarm system services for both residential and commercial properties. Our company offers the most superior, reliable video surveillance equipment on the market at prices that will not break the bank. You can trust that your property will be getting the most secure technology available. Our owner has over 20 years of experience in communication and security technology and will utilize that knowledge when planning out your security needs. Provide your family or business with video surveillance from Car-Tel Enterprises for the best home or business security money can buy.
“Car-Tel Enterprises was born out of I trend I saw in the communication business. Time and time again, big-name companies installed low-grade products at high prices, with no thought to the customer’s feelings. I have seen installations done hurriedly, and in shabby conditions. I started Car-Tel Enterprises because all customers should get the best-quality job for their money. That’s why I do the job right the first time.” ~ Chad Carter. Contact Chad Carter at 785-564-0118 today to receive a free estimate on your video surveillance installation.

Unemployment Rates

The state’s September seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.8 percent, down from 4.9 percent in August and down from 5.3 percent in September 2013.

Kansas gained 10,700 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, an increase of 1 percent since last year, and 9,200 nonfarm jobs, a 0.7 percent increase. Since last month, Kansas gained 1,300 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, a 0.1 percent increase. The state gained 2,400 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs, a 0.2 percent increase since last month.

“The Kansas economy is strong and continues to grow.” said Lana Gordon, Secretary of Labor. “Unemployment claims are at lows not seen since 2008. More than 23,000 Kansans have found work in the past year alone and are finding jobs that are paying better wages.”

Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 11,400 private sector jobs since last year, or 1 percent, and 9,500 nonfarm jobs, an increase of 0.7 percent. Since August, private sector jobs decreased by 5,300, a 0.5 percent decline. The state gained 17,400 total nonfarm jobs over the month, a 1.3 percent increase.

“Despite national trends showing people leaving the labor force, Kansas continues in the right direction with more people entering the labor force and finding jobs, driving the state’s unemployment rate down,” said Justin McFarland, Director, Labor Market Information Services.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September was 4.4 percent, down from 4.8 percent in August and down from 5.1 percent last year.

There were 10,978 initial claims for unemployment benefits in September 2014, up from 9,953 in August and down from 11,297 last year. There were 68,335 continued claims in September, up from 62,606 the previous month and down from 112,887 in September 2013. These numbers include all available programs.

Mitchell County unemployment for September 2014 was 3.1% compared to 3.6% in August 2014 and 3% in September 2013.

farmway

The USDA has sent out the Top 100 Co-ops list in its latest issue of “Rural Cooperatives” magazine. Only four Kansas based cooperatives made the list including your very own Farmway Co-op! Farmway Co-op ranks 70 in the top 100, which is something we can all be proud of as we all play a part in Farmway’s success. Farmway is also one of 139 cooperatives that are part of the “Co-op Century Club,” which is a remarkable feat for any business to reach its 100th birthday. Farmway is 103 years old this year!

AgMark LLC Names Mark Hafliger as President of AgMark LLC

AgMark LLC announced that Mark Hafliger has been promoted to President of AgMark LLC. Hafliger succeeds Jeff Bechard who has been in the President role since May 2002 and will be transitioning out of the company. AgMark LLC is owned by Farmway Co-op, Cloud County Co-op and Randall Farmers Co-op Union.
Hafliger will assume Bechard’s responsibilities on November 1 and will report directly to the AgMark board of directors: Art Duerksen, Farmway Co-op, Mark Paul, Cloud County Co-op, and Archie Thompson, Randall Farmers Co-op Union. Bechard will help Hafliger transition into the role until October 31 to ensure no disruption to the business.
“Having been at AgMark since the beginning of its formation and seeing all the ups and downs of the business over the years, I am very proud of what AgMark has become,” said Bechard. “I know that Mark is very passionate about the success of the company and I have a great feeling about the future of AgMark with his leadership and the strength of the entire AgMark team.”
A 22-year veteran of the grain industry, Hafliger joined the company in March 2008 as the Commodity Manager. Prior to AgMark LLC, Hafliger had a number of roles in the grain industry starting with a position at ADM. “I feel honored and excited to carry on where Jeff has left off,” said Hafliger. “I want to continue the growth that Jeff and our owners have provided AgMark customers.”
During his tenure as first Marketing Manager of AgMark in 1999 and being appointed President in 2002, Bechard has been a vital point in the success of AgMark LLC as well as through the investment of the partners. During its first year of existence, AgMark and its cooperative owners handled 26 million bushels. Now, the AgMark system handles nearly 60 million bushels of grain each year with 48 million bushels of storage capacity. Within the last five years, the average total of sales is $400 million. Crop protection insurance and grain marketing services have also been added to meet the needs of its area producers.
“It has been an honor and privilege to work for the three cooperatives, the AgMark employees and the customers over the past 15 years,” said Bechard. “This felt like the right time to move on and focus on the new opportunities in my personal life and the challenges ahead as I move to Columbus, Ohio.”

Winners of the Mitchell County Food Pantry Coloring Contest were announced on Wednesday, October 15th. Winners were Issac Wiles, Kindergartener at Beloit Elementary School, Lily DiNuzzo, 1st Grader at St. John’s Catholic School, Ryder Allen, 2nd Grader at Tipton Christian School, Ariana Armstrong, 4th Grader at Beloit Elementary School, Holley Thornbrugh, 6th Grader at Beloit Elementary School.

Each winner received a $25 gift certificate from H&R Block. Winning pictures will be featured on note cards. A gift set of five cards and envelopes will be available for sale for $5 at H&R Block Beloit, local churches and at the Beloit Holiday Craft Fair.

BHS Project Management Class

I have three students in Project Management who are currently unemployed…..during third hour. I only had one student last year, so I turned away work that she couldn’t get done. Now I’m trying to beat the bushes again, looking for projects for this year’s students.

My three students are Brooke Fairchild, Ian Birdsell and Makenna Trumble. They are all really good with a variety of computer programs, or other business-related things. If you know of a project you’d like to see done but don’t have the time or skills to complete, please check with me. My students might be able to help you out.

Please pass the word, and keep this in mind if you know of things that can be done for community groups, church groups, or others who could use our help.

• Spotlight healthcare resources in Mitchell County
• Recreation
• Economic Development information
• Highlight key local events
This directory will be used as part of the Economic Development outreach, in local motels, by Tourism along with the City for new residents. This glossy booklet shows people why Mitchell County is the kind of place they want to live and work. Currently, there is a lack of material to share that showcases what Mitchell County has to offer.

You have the opportunity to be highlighted in three areas. All Chamber members will be listed in alphabetical order as well as category order at the back of the guide at no charge. Additionally, Chamber members have the exclusive advertising rights to promote your business in this publication.

If you would like to advertise your business in the directory, you can contact the Chamber office at 785-738-2717, email beloitchamber@nckcn.com or call Dale Twaddell at 738-7284 to confirm your spot. Dale is working with the Chamber to sell the advertising and get the ad content.

The Chamber is excited to produce a professional directory that will highlight the Chamber members. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
