School Mentorship

A group of Beloit citizens are helping the Beloit High School & St. John’s High School strengthen their mentorship program for next year. They are helping them come up with a list of employers who are willing to host a senior student in their field of interest for 47 to 94 minutes every school day for a half semester, full semester or a full year. Please note, this student is expected to gain real-world experience in their chosen field, not complete busy work. You will also need to fill out an evaluation sheet at the end of the student’s time with you and also call the school if the student doesn’t show up. If you are willing to teach a student about your career, please email Mandy Fincham, Community Development Specialist with North Central Regional Planning, mfincham@nckcn.com by Thursday, April 23 with the following information:

Company and Contact Name, Email and Phone
Position(s) student would mentor
Do you have a preference in having a student 47 or 94 minutes?
Do you have a preference in having a student a half semester, full semester or full school year?

This is not a guarantee you will have a student. But this gives students a list of willing employers to choose from to help them explore their interests and understand what it takes to work in that particular field. If a student is interested in your business, the school will contact you to set up an agreement. Our hope is to show Beloit & St. John’s students what is available in the area and make a connection with a local business, so when they graduate college, they will know the opportunities in the area and be more likely to come back to start their careers.

Little Bo-tique Resale Kids Consignment

Kelsey Krier, Jean Krier and Kendra Ryser are excited to bring a typically large-city event to Rural Kansas. Little Bo-tique Resale will be holding their first children’s consignment sale at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds on April 2-4th, 2015. The mother/daughter trio felt this would be beneficial to many families in this area as kids are always growing and transitioning to new stages of childhood and adolescence. They welcome all gently used clothing and shoes from birth-teen, toys, games, furniture, equipment and maternity. This bi-annual event is open to the public Thursday April 2nd, 4-8pm, Friday, April 3rd, 9am-8pm and Saturday April 4th, 9am-3pm.

Updated Website on New Hire Reporting

TOPEKA, Kan. – Federal and State law requires employers to report newly hired and re-hired employees in Kansas to the New Hire Directory within 20 days of the hire. The Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) has launched a new website to provide employers with detailed information about reporting new hires, including how to report online and other reporting options.
The new website, at http://www.dol.ks.gov/UI/newhires_BUS.aspx, includes information about the law and when and how to report every business’ new employee in Kansas. The website provides the required information about who must report, how it should be reported and how to get additional assistance when reporting.
Under the law, new hire reporting speeds up the child support income withholding order process, expedites collection of child support from parents who change jobs frequently and helps locate non-custodial parents to help in establishing paternity and child support orders. New hire reporting helps children receive the support they deserve. Employers serve as key partners in ensuring financial stability for many children and families. Information collected through the new hire directory is provided to the Kansas Department of Children and Families Child Support Services.
New hire reporting also allows states to reduce unemployment benefit and worker’s compensation overpayments and fraud.
Information reported to KDOL is shared with other states through the federal New Hire Directory.
