KANSAS SILVER HAIRED LEGISLATORS HOLD ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

The Kansas Silver Haired Legislators held their 2015 organizational meeting on Tuesday, May 12 in Topeka. The meeting is for election of officers of the general SHL body for the next two years, as well as the election of officers for the Executive Board for the same period of time. The Executive Board is made up of the chair representatives from each of the eleven Planning and Service Areas (PSA’s) across Kansas, which coincides with the regions of the Area Agencies on Aging in the state. The newly elected officers of the general body also serve on the Executive Board, as well as the treasurer.

The newly elected officers of the general body of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature include:

SPEAKER: Don Woodard (re-elected), Shawnee County (Auburn), PSA 4
SPEAKER PRO TEM: Jane Gingles, Clay County (Clay Center), PSA 8
FLOOR LEADER: Carl Williams, Sedgwick County (Wichita), PSA 2

The newly elected officers of the Executive Board include:

PRESIDENT: Jay Rowh, Mitchell County (Beloit), PSA 8
VICE-PRESIDENT: Thomas Gordon, Wyandotte County (Kansas City, Ks), PSA 1
SECRETARY: Jim Snyder, Shawnee County (Topeka), PSA 4
TREASURER: Ella Rundle, Barber County (Medicine Lodge), PSA 6

The Silver Haired Legislature was created by an Act of Congress in 1969, and was designed to identify issues important to older Kansas adults 60+, and to educate the Kansas Legislature about those issues. The Mission of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature is to: Educate the citizenry about the needs of the elderly and of the legislative process; Communicate and serve as liaison for our constituents and State Legislators; and Participate and be involved as an advocate for senior citizen issues.

Each PSA meets in the spring to discuss the various issues that are important to that region. In July, the Executive Board will convene to bring all these issues together, and reduce them to the four or five deemed most important, which will then be presented to the entire SHL body at their annual October meeting in Topeka.

Becker Autos & Trailers Sponsor NASCAR #98, Josh Wise, at Kansas Speedway May 9, 2015

From the Grandstands to the Pit Box
Blake and Lydia Housh of Beloit didn’t know what the weekend would bring when they headed to NASCAR’s SpongeBob Squarepants 400 on May 9th. They were excited to attend the race and festivities, hoping for the lucky chance to get an autograph from Jeff Gordon in his final season.
“I’ve been a NASCAR fan since I can remember. Gordon was always my favorite so when my wife and I scheduled to attend last weekend’s race, I was more than excited to go. I thought maybe we’d have the chance to meet some drivers and get some behind the scene’s looks… but I never thought our business name would end up on the hood of a car in the NASCAR race!” said Blake Housh co-owner of Becker Autos & Trailers in Beloit.
The Houshes went to attend the qualifying and truck races on Friday, May 8th. They purchased FinishLine passes to be able to take a tour of the pits. While watching the inspection process, they noticed the #98 car of Josh Wise had a blank hood. They decided to jump at the far chance of getting Becker Autos & Trailers name on it. Lydia Housh, co-owner of Becker Autos & Trailers, quickly grabbed a business card and handed it to a guy on the crew. She told them if they wanted a sponsor, Becker Autos & Trailers would be interested. It wasn’t more than 10 minutes later and #98 Josh Wise’s director of marketing came out to the fan walk and grabbed the Houshes and took them back to the hauler. She asked Blake and Lydia how quickly they could have a logo sent and where they wanted their name.
“I said the hood of course” said Lydia Housh.
The director of marketing got in touch with a printing company to have the logo printed on Saturday morning prior to the race; by 2:00 the race car would be the Becker Autos & Trailers number #98 Josh Wise car.
Blake was so excited he immediately started making phone calls to all his relatives and also owner of Becker Autos, Alvin Becker.
“At first, Alvin thought we were joking around” said Blake Housh. “But then, he headed up towards the race track to take in the sponsor experience. We met several different drivers and crew members. We walked behind the scenes, and sat in the pit box with Wise’s crew chief for the Kansas Speedway event. It was so surreal, but so real!”
The Houshes always talked about how awesome it would be to have their business name on the hood of a NASCAR Sprint Cup car while watching the races, joking about what it would cost and it being a dream they never thought they’d achieve.
“We’re proud of how the #98 team represented us and have so much respect for what they achieve. They moved up over 10 spots from the start, even with damage from getting hit. It was a strong finish and we can’t wait to follow him more throughout the season! The whole event was an experience of a lifetime. I never thought when I started this small business over 30 years ago, Becker Autos would have an opportunity like this!” said Alvin Becker, owner of Becker Autos.
Becker Autos & Trailers is a used vehicle and new trailer dealer in Downs and Beloit. To find out more about Becker Autos & Trailers check out their facebook page or go to beckerautos.com. Becker Autos & Trailers sells new Aluma, BigTex, FinishLine, Midsota, Bourbon Grain Trailers, Sundowner, CarryOn, Sharp, Titan and Hillsboro Trailers.
Josh Wise, the #98 sprint cup car driver, can be followed on facebook or twitter @Josh_Wise or online at joshwiseracing.com.

Beloit Prayer Breakfast

Erin Burks to Speak at Beloit Area Prayer Breakfast
The Beloit Area Prayer Breakfast will be observed on the first Thursday of May from 6:30 am to 7:45 am on May 7, 2015, at First Christian Church Family Life Center (gym). The keynote speaker will be Erin Burks. She has recently written a book titled “Twice the Blessing” about the experiences of her family when she gave birth to pre-mature twins 12 years ago.
Erin and her husband, Josh, experienced a faith-based journey of parenthood as the twins, Ashley and Jacob, needed specialized neonatal care. One of the twins, Ashley, had a homecoming in heaven. The other twin, Jacob, had a miraculous homecoming to the family home. Erin and Josh now live in Jewell, KS, along with their two sons, 12 year old Jacob- the surviving twin, and 10 year old Caleb.
When Erin was asked why she is looking forward to this event she replied, “I am honored to be part of a wonderful event that helps us remember the importance of daily prayer. It will be great to honor our daughter in heaven and to help others who are struggling with a variety of concerns.”
Erin has also been quoted as saying, “Everyone has blessings in their lives and sadly tragedies too. Through our faith in God, we need to continue to be thankful for all the blessings we do have and pray for guidance in the comfort and healing of the tragedies we experience.”
Terri Neubert will be providing a violin solo before Erin Burks will speak. Local lay persons from several local churches will offer a short prayer for our families, our churches, our schools, our military and our government. The breakfast is free and all people in North Central Kansas are welcome to participate. Donations are welcome to help with similar future events.
This gathering is co-sponsored by the Beloit Ministerial Association and group of volunteers from local churches in cooperation with the National Day of Prayer. In 2014, over 40,000 National Day of Prayer Events were held in the United States.
