OLDER KANSAN’S DAY SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16
Once again, the North Central – Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring the annual Older Kansan’s Day in Topeka at the State Capitol. This year the event is scheduled for Tuesday, February 16. The rally gives area Seniors, Caregivers, and anyone else interested in Senior Issues the opportunity to visit with our area Legislators, as well as be a visible presence in the Capitol to show all those involved in State Government that the impact on Kansas Seniors needs to be considered on any legislation up for debate in either the Senate or the House of Representatives.
Anyone in Kansas is welcome to attend, especially if you are interested and concerned about Senior Issues. The NC-FHAAA will help you schedule an appointment with your area legislator if you so desire, but your presence in the State Capitol alone will have an impact on the Senators, Representatives, and members of the Governor’s staff, sending the message that Seniors and Senior Issues are important to Kansans. Cost for the event is $10.00, which is used to defray the cost of the catered meal that will take place on the second floor of the State Capitol rotunda. Those wanting to register can do so by calling NC-FHAAA at 1-800-432-2703.
The state can greatly reduce spending by passing legislation that makes it easier for an elderly person to stay in their own home, at a fraction of the cost it takes for them to receive care in a senior care facility. While those facilities definitely have their place, statistics show that the longer a person can stay in their own home, with a minimum of proper help and care, the better their quality of life. They also have better control of their financial well-being, and are thus able to provide more of their own financial support once they do turn to the nursing home as their care needs increase. This greatly helps the state, as they are not called upon to provide the finances nearly as soon. It is a win-win for both.
The Solomon Valley Transportation Bus will be used to help take area residents to the Topeka rally. Call Jay Rowh at 785-738-2310, or email at jayandritarowh@yahoo.com to reserve your seat on the bus. Plan on spending Tuesday, February 16th in Topeka, and help keep the needs of our Kansas Senior Citizens at the forefront in the minds of those who most directly determine policy for our state.
