NCK CASA

ATTENTION!  April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.  NCK CASA will be raising awareness about Child abuse once again and invites you to join us.  Every child deserves to have a happy childhood.  Join us in promoting child abuse prevention this April.

Why we do this?  Children in our community are being abused and neglected.  Abuse cases filed in 2017, per county:  Cloud-77; Mitchell-32; Republic-14; Lincoln-14; Jewell-6.  These are only the new cases filed in 2017 and do not include ongoing cases from previous years.

NCK CASA is part of a national program that recruits, trains and supports community volunteers to advocate for these children and speak up for their best interest.  Once CASA volunteers are trained they are appointed by a judge to a child’s case.  With staff support, CASA’s are able to make a difference in the lives of children in the communities we serve.

Prevention/Awareness:  Many of you are familiar with the April awareness/prevention campaign we launched last year.  Community involvement not only amazed us at NCK CASA but gained interest at the state level.  We are truly blessed to have participation and support from our community and hope you are able to join in this year’s events.  To better prepare for April we have an order form for items available for purchase to show your support.  This is not a fundraiser for CASA.  These items are sold at our cost to make awareness/prevention the main focus.

Wear Blue Day:  We have several activities planned for April and will kick off the month with our Wear Blue Day event.  Friday, April 6th is National Wear Blue Day and we plan on doing just that with help from you.  Blue shirts are available for purchase or wear your own.  We ask that you take a picture, post it on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, #nckcasablueday.  Make sure to like our page, NCK CASA so we can share it on our FB page.

Schools participating in Blue Day:  Concordia CES-CMS-CHS, Glasco K-12, Miltonvale K-12, Clifton-Clyde K-12, Beloit Elementary and Republic County Elementary.

Super Hero Fun Run:  Saturday, April 7th.  Registration forms will be available soon.

Strategic Doing Meeting

Just a reminder that our next Strategic Doing Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 21st, 7pm at NCK Tech Student Union.

Betty Johnson will meet with us again as a large group next Wednesday.  During that meeting each group will report back on your progress, what you have accomplished, where you are headed in the next 30/60/90 days and what you have learned.  During those reports you will have time to ask questions, get ideas and comments from others at the meeting.  This will be a time to look at any overlap of projects, break down silos and build collaboration where possible.

It is exciting to see these projects start to come to life and witness the collaboration happen.  Be sure to reach out to others who may want to be a part of this opportunity in Mitchell County.  As always, please let Heather know if you need help.

Thank you for being a part of something new to help Mitchell County grow!

OLDER KANSAN’S DAY IN TOPEKA SET FOR FEBRUARY 13

On Tuesday, February 13, 2018, North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (based in Manhattan) will be hosting their annual “Older Kansan’s Day at the State Capitol”. This is an invitation to you, your friends, and anyone else interested in Senior Issues, to meet at the State Capitol on that day, and express your opinion on issues important to you, and to Kansas Seniors all across the state.
The day will begin when you meet with NC-FHAAA members in the State Capitol sometime between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. Appointments with your State Legislators can be scheduled in the morning, usually in groups of 3-5 people. They will also provide each person with “talking points” on the positions of the Kansas Association of Area Agencies on Aging and Disabilities (K4Ad), as well as vital statistics on the value of senior programs in the State of Kansas. These are merely starting points that you can use when meeting the State Legislators, but you are not restricted to these points. Any issue that concerns you is certainly open for discussion, and you are welcome to state your position on any of those concerns. We especially want to focus on issues important to seniors that day, but you are not restricted to just those issues.
Each appointment with the State Legislator will be for approximately 15-20 minutes, at which time another group will be scheduled to meet with that legislator. Since the Kansas House of Representatives convenes daily at 11:00 AM, the appointments with House members will only last until about 10:45. Appointments with members of the Kansas Senate can continue, as the Senate does not convene until after lunch (around 1:30 PM).
At lunch, attendees will meet on the second floor of the State Capitol, where a box lunch will be served to all those participating in the event, as well as our State Legislator guests. Price for the box lunch will be $10.00.
Other activities available to the participants include going to either House or Senate committee hearings (especially if the hearing concerns legislation important to Kansas Seniors), attending either the House or Senate Session in the visitor’s gallery, or even taking a tour of the Capitol itself. You may want to testify at a committee hearing if that topic is in your expertise, and you have made arrangements with the committee chairman to do so.
The goal for Older Kansan’s Day is to let our State Legislators know what topics are important to Kansas Seniors, their Caregivers, and those who support those issues. It is also important to let the Legislators know that we are watching what they do, and that WE VOTE. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and there is a large contingent of Kansas Seniors and their supporters at the event. Call Jay Rowh, NC-FHAAA Board Chairman, at 785-738-2310 for more information and/or to reserve your spot for the event. The Solomon Valley Transportation (SVT) bus will be taking passengers from our area to the State Capitol but you are also encouraged to take your own car or ride with your friends in their car. Mark February 13th on your calendar, and make your voice heard on the important Senior Issues in Kansas.

The Chamber is pleased to announce “Prairie Connection” will be playing at the Chamber Banquet from 6pm-8pm.

Prairie Connection is a forty year old band that has evolved from the Taqua Judd band to the Gamma Rays and now to the Prairie Connection.  This five piece group consists of some of Beloit’s most talented musicians – Josh Fuller (guitar, banjo and vocals), Dan Fleming (guitar and vocals), Linus Sarver (keyboard and vocals), Mike Harbaugh (fiddle) and Dr. David Neubert (bass and vocals). They perform an eclectic variety of Oldies but Goldies music including country, popular, folk, gospel and blue grass styles.
